Burning Man 101?Burning Man is a volunteer-driven event focused on community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance held annually in the western United States. The event is guided by ten core principles: https://burningman.org/about/10-principles/
-
How does Nest relate to Burning Man?The Burning Man Regional Network plays a key role in the year-round extension of the Burning Man experience, supporting it as a global cultural movement. Nest is an officially recognised regional event associated with Burning Man, held annually at a countryside site in Devon, England. In 2023 there will be approximately 1,000 participants.
-
What can I expect?Ok, so here's the thing… You shouldn't really expect anything at all. Your ticket gets you through the gate, and that's about it. Nest, like Burning Man, is a volunteer-created event. There are no spectators - everyone who attends is a participant. It is for you, and every other attendee, to design and deliver the event.
-
Yea, but c'mon now, what can I really expect?Ok, it is true to say that some volunteers have very kindly developed an organisation and a structure over the years. Thanks to their efforts, you can be sure that there will be some infrastructure such as toilets, a medical team, fire safety, welfare etc. There will also be a volunteer Arts team who will put their efforts into encouraging and supporting artists to provide some visual gifts to the event. Like every other Burning event, you will encounter a number of Theme Camps (see below) and get to enjoy the many weird and wonderful things that their members have decided to gift you (you lucky devil)! But that really is it... the rest is down to you. If there is something that you would really like to see at Nest, now is the time to think about how you can make it happen!
-
What is a Theme Camp?Theme Camps are a key component of any Burning event. Whilst general-camping is also available for those who wish to go it alone, the majority of attendees will pool their resources and camp together in small communities during the event. There are practical advantages to joining a Theme Camp (for example, a lot of TCs will share facilities and prepare and eat meals together), however, the really exciting bit is that by harnessing the joined-up efforts of their members, Theme Camps are able to gift on a grander scale to the wider Nest community. Examples of ways in which Theme Camps do this include: providing public event spaces for others to use, hosting workshops in-line with their own theme(s), curating performances, planning and hosting parties, setting up bars, setting up a costume exchange, serving food, serving coffee, supporting an art installation, setting up games etc. etc. etc.
-
Are tickets on sale? There will be 1,000 tickets available for Nest 2023 (up from 700 last year) and these will be released in a series of waves. The first wave of tickets will go on sale on 30th January 2023. In order to buy a ticket, you will need to pre-register for the event (fill in a short web-form) here: https://www.quicket.com/events/156433-burning-nest-2023/#/registration
-
How much do event tickets cost?(All tickets are valid for the whole week): Standard tickets are £140 (2022 was £130) Low income tickets are £83 (2022 was £75)** Parking £20 (2022 was £10) Child Ticket (aged 14 or under) £1 (same as 2022) Child ticket (aged 15-18) £55 (2022 was £50) *These tickets are for the event only. What is La Coneja Blanca?La Coneja Blanca is the name of our emerging community which will be taking a new Theme Camp to Nest 2023. The Spanish phrase La Coneja Blanca translates into English as The White Rabbit.
-
What is the theme? (short-attention span version)La Coneja Blanca is a home for the silly, the surreal and the (Hi)spanic. Think fun Spanish & Latin American references with Alice in Wonderland/ psychedelia/ Surrealism aesthetic.
-
What is the theme? (longer version)When we were throwing around ideas for a theme, the one that caused the most excitement was a celebration of Hispanic culture (cultures from all over the Spanish-speaking world). There are native Spanish-speakers in our community who will be on familiar ground, and the rest of us have an opportunity to draw from a vast pool of inspiration and have a lot of fun interpreting and celebrating Hispanic cultures. A lot of our visuals will centre on our mascot: the white rabbit. We want members of the community to interpret this however way they see fit. For example: - a magician pulling a rabbit out of a hat - the Playboy Bunny - the vicious beast in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. A lot of our aesthetic will be informed by the iconic tale of Alice following the white rabbit and tumbling down the rabbit hole into Wonderland.
-
How will this theme be expressed?Visually, in the design of our camp and our public-facing events space (see below). Through the types of events that we want you, our community, to host for the wider Nest community. Through the camp meals that we will prepare and eat together. By having a lot of Spanish-language shouting out the front of our camp. Through the signage, labelling and roles around our camp.
-
Where will our 'events' take place? The centre-piece of our camp is a large decorated and waterproof tent with ground-cover and comforts. We have around 50 sqm of interior space. There will be some form of basic sound system, lighting and a projector available in the event space (you can speak to us about any other requirements your event might have).
-
Will I need to speak Spanish to join La Coneja Blanca?Absolutely not, though there is at least a small chance that you might pick some up!
-
Will I need to be silly and/or surreal to join La Coneja Blanca?Yes, at least a little bit. At most, entirely.
-
What are my responsibilities as a camp member? You will be expected to sign up to at least three shifts on the cooking and tidying rotas and get involved in preparations by assisting at least one team (for example by hosting an event or helping to fabricate some of the decoration).
-
What are camp fees?Camp fees are aside from your event ticket, which you will buy from the Nest team. Camp fees pay towards your food, drink and camp facilities and towards the public-facing structure, decoration and events put on by the camp. We anticipate camp fees being £135... *To be confirmed very shortly.
-
What can I do to help RIGHT NOW?Thank you for your energy! Stay tuned to the Whatsapp broadcast channel for more information, however, right now you could: Tell us about any ideas you have for an event that you could host Express interest towards an area you'd like to be involved in (eg. kitchen or making the decoration components) Start collecting rabbit ornaments for our lawn! The more hideous the better. Send any weird and wonderful ideas to our suggestion box: https://form.jotform.com/230107259805352 Let us know if you have access to a resource that you think would be beneficial to the camp (like a gas catering stove or a van).
-
What is the Council of Legitimate Hispanic Opinion? The Council of Legitimate Hispanic Opinion is a Whatsapp group within our community for native Spanish-speakers to work on specifically Spanish-language ideas (decor/ events). If you are a native Spanish-speaker and have not been added to this group, please let us know.
-
What is NOT included in camp fees? You will need a separate Nest event ticket. You will need to bring your own tent, clothing and costume, accessories, snacks, alcohol etc. You will need to factor in the cost of getting to the event site, however, we will look into collective travel options if there is enough interest. More information will follow.
-
I feel lost, can you help me understand?Yes, please reach out. There are no silly questions and we are doing all of this because we find it really fun, so we will want to hear from you and answer any questions you might have!
-
Can I invite my friends as well?In principle, yes, we are open to more camp members (and especially if they have ties to Hispanic culture), however, please just run it by us and get a green light before you confirm any details with your friends!
-
Will you be having a pre-event meet up?Yes, more information will follow, but we are planning to have a day-long event in London on Sunday 7th May to test-run our public-facing structure and kitchen set-up and maybe trial-run some events or screen a Spanish-language movie. This will very much be a bonus event and camp members are not obliged to attend!
